SUSTAINABILITY

Our Sustainability Journey

Daffodil Foods is on its own path to continuously improve its sustainability and will regularly review progress. Below are some of the actions taken and our reasoning.

  • We are proud to be members of Sedex. This is important because Sedex is one of the world's leading ethical trade service providers, working to improve working conditions in global supply chains. Sedex helps by providing practical tools, services and a community network to help us improve our responsible and sustainable business practices, and source responsibly.

  • When we wash our production lines, the interface, washing and rinsing water contains food ingredients, so we pump this water in to a tanker on site. This is important because we take this material to our local anaerobic digester, where the energy from the food it contains is converted into a renewable energy source.

  • We have designed our supply chain carefully using freezing, longer shelf-life components and routes to market to ensure that all of every batch can be used. This is important because without this consideration, batches would be made to order and any excess would then go to waste.

  • We have decided to use cardboard, rather than plastic materials for outer cases. This is important because our cardboard cases can be widely recycled AND contain 60% recycled material too.

  • We work with suppliers to use returnable trays, rather than cardboard cases.

  • We have decided to use heat seal foil lids on our pots, as these can be recycled. This is important because many of the alternative heat seal plastic lids cannot be recycled and so will end up in landfill.

  • We have reviewed different materials for our pots and all currently available options have some limitations. Daffodil Foods has therefore chosen to use non-brittle, polypropylene light-weight pots, in shapes designed to nest together. This is important because these materials are widely recycled and are light and the nesting design means they take up less space for transit to save energy.

  • We offer customers individual portion controlled packs with as long a shelf life as possible. This is important because globally approximately one third of all food produced for human consumption is wasted. Our action enables customers the choice to buy just what they need for a serving, rather than creating the risk of a larger pack going to waste
